6 day Rwanda primate safari is an exclusively primate adventure taking on a tour to two primate habitats in Rwanda that is Nyungwe forest national park and volcanoes national park, Nyungwe forest national park is a forested national park and a home to many primate species such as chimpanzees, Ruwenzori colobus, L’Hoest monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, silver monkey, grey cheeked mangabey and many more. Volcanoes national park is a home to the critically endangered mountain gorillas and it is the only national park in Rwanda offering mountain gorilla trekking experience.

Detailed itinerary for the safari

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and city tour

On the first day of the safari you will arrive in Rwanda using Kigali international airport in Kigali city, from the airport you will transfer to your hotel and check in. depending on the time of your arrival you can have a city tour ad on this tour you will visit fascinating sites like Kigali genocide memorial, Kandt Museum, craft market and many more. After the experience you will drive back to your hotel, have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 2: Transfer from Kigali to Nyungwe forest national park

On the second day of the safari you will wake up early in the morning for breakfast, meet your safari driver and embark on your journey to Nyungwe forest national park which is a drive of about6 hours . Nyungwe forest national park is a great forested national park situated in the south region of Rwanda and a home to many primates such as chimpanzees, olive baboons, golden monkey and many more. On your way to Nyungwe forest national park you will makes top over in Nyanza, Huye and go for a tour in the ethnographic museum, in Nyanza you will also visit the king’s palace museum and have lunch. After lunch you will precede with the remaining journey to the park which you will reach in the evening, when you arrive in the park you will have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 3: Chimpanzee tracking experience

On the third day of the safari you will wake up early in the morning for breakfast then drive to Nyungwe forest national park for chimpanzee tracking experience, you are supposed to be at the briefing spot as early as 5:00 am in the morning and in the briefing rules and regulations to be followed on the tracking experience will be read to you. You can also hire a porter to assist you with your bags and be assigned a trail to use that is either Uwinka trail head or Cyamudongo trail head, after the briefing you ill head in to the forests with guidance of ranger guide as on your way you will spot many tree plants, birds and other primates such as Ruwenzori colobus, L’Hoest monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, silver monkey, grey cheeked mangabey. When you find the chimpanzees you will be given one hour of taking pictures and watching chimpanzees collecting fruits, leaves and playing with each other which is a thrill. After the experience you will drive back to your loge, you will have lunch and in the afternoon you will return to the park for a canopy walk. Canopy walk is an excessively exciting experience offering a walk on a raised canopy on top of the trees of Nyungwe, from the canopy you get bird eye’s view of numerous bird species and scenic surrounding. In the evening you will back to the lodge, have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes national park

On the fourth day of the safari you will wake up early in the morning for breakfast, checkout of your lodge and embark on your journey to volcanoes national park which is a dive of approximately 6 hours. Volcanoes national park is a one of kind national park in Rwanda as it is a home to the endangered mountain gorillas and many Virunga volcanoes such as mount karisimbi, mount Muhabura, mount Gahinga, mount Bisoke and mount Sabyinyo. You will reach the park in the evening, check into your lodge, have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 5: Gorilla trekking experience

On the fifth day of the safari you will wake up early in the morning for breakfast then drive to Virunga national park for mountain gorilla trekking experience which is the highlight of the safari, in the park you will go to the briefing area where rules and regulations to be followed will be ready to. You will also be grouped into 8 and assigned a group to trek and also hire a porter, and then you will head in to the forests together with your packed lunch. Mountain gorilla trekking experience takes approximately 3-4 hours or more depending on the group you were assigned to trek and where they spent the night, when you find the gorillas you will be allowed only 1 hour to be in the presence of the mountain gorillas and in this one hour you can take pictures as long as your flash light is off, watch the gorillas pick fruits, fruits and looking after their babies. After the experience you will walk back to the park’s headquarters, you can decide to go for an optional activity such as Dian Fossey grave Or Visiting the Caves or Batwa trail

Day 6:  transfer back to Kigali for departure

On the sixth and last day of the safari you will wake up breakfast not as early as the last 4 days, have breakfast and go for Iby’Iwacu cultural village tour, this tours unveils all the dynamics of Rwandese culture, norms and traditions to you. on this experience you will be entertained by local cultural songs and dances and  interact with village elders, after the experience you will  back to your lodge, have lunch and then checkout of your lodge and embark on your drive to Kigali. in Kigali you will be dropped off either at your hotel in Kigali or at Kigali international airport for your flight back home marking the end of your safari.
