The Birding safaris are less exploited in Rwanda since the country is much popular with primate safaris like Gorillas, Chimpanzees and Golden Monkeys not until of recent when it was published in several prominent tourism platforms which indicated that the country has the biggest concentration of birds per kilometer in Africa. Rwanda has a long list of birds with over 750 bird species compiled in just an area of 26,338 square Kilometer the total area of the whole country. The country’s location in the Albertine Rift Valley gives it an added advantage with stunning landscape which acts as ideal habitat for birds, this makes birders enjoy much as they have high chances of seeing 27 Albertine endemics’ bird species as birding is done throughout the year.
Birding in Rwanda is most commonly done in Nyungwe National park known as the Important Bird Area by Birdlife International, this is the largest montane rainforest in Rwanda located in the south-western Rwanda is a home of over 310 bird species almost half of the country bird species, the forest shelters all the 27 Albertine endemics, like Red-Colared Mountain babbler, Albertine owlet, Grauer’s and Neumann’s warblers, collared apalis, Rwenzori Turaco, Regal Sunbird and others. Other key areas are: Akagera National park which is one of the country’s big parks located in the North east of the country has different eco systems making it harbor different bird species from swamp most preferable birds like Shoebill which can be seen in the famous Akagera River which is a source of both water and food for both birds and animals to the open savannahs with rolling grassland with doted acacia and doted woodland in the lowlands near Akagera River.Akagera national park takes over half of the total bird species in Rwanda with the most recent survey indicates over 525 bird species. Volcanoes National park located in the Virunga mountains covering five mountains of Bisoke, Gahinga, Muhavura and Sabiyo. The park is well known for the giant appes the Gorillas and Golden monkey but its one of the riches birding destination with most rare birds, it’s a home of around 165 bird species out of which 17 are endemic.
