Weather and Climate at Solio Ranch Conservancy: Solio Ranch Conservancy lies approximately 110 miles north of Nairobi, nestled in the valley between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains. The nearest town is Nyeri, 24 miles away. The Solio Ranch Conservancy in its entirety covers around 70 square miles. Solio Ranch Conservancy was originally a cattle ranch with a focus on rhino conservation. This led to the establishment of Solio Ranch as a conservancy in 1970. With a black rhino breeding program as well as a large complement of white rhinos, many reserves around East Africa have received rhinos from Solio Ranch Conservancy.

 The Solio Ranch is home to the four of the famous “Big Five” at the Solio Ranch Conservancy with elephants noticeably and purposely absent. Sightings of lounging lions, beautiful waterbuck, and the much-loved white and black rhino can be seen on safari here. There have been over 350 species of birds recorded. The landscape of the conservancy is also comprises grasslands with the yellow fever tree-lined river bank of the Moyo River providing vegetation and refuge for a myriad of wildlife.

Due to the high altitude, Solio Ranch experiences a cool climate. The reserve is close to the equator, which keeps temperatures from varying much. Temperatures in the low to mid-twenties Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit) are characteristic of the daytime, although it’s much cooler once the sun sets. The dry season falls between June and September with the short rains falling around October and November. Longer rainfall comes down between March and May. Game viewing is at its best between July and October.  Pack warm clothes for game drives in the early morning. The long rains are from March to May. The short rains peak in November.

Consider traveling to Solio Ranch Conservancy between October and February. The rains will cool the days, animal sightings will still be good and there will be availability in nearby accommodations. There will also be fewer vehicles traversing the conservancy.

Wet Season–October to May

From October to May, Solio Ranch Conservancy experiences two main rainy seasons: the short rains and the long rains. These are separated by a drier period from December to February. During this time, the sun often has a hard time shining through the clouds, but the rain usually doesn’t fall continuously throughout the day.

In October and November, Solio Ranch Conservancy experiences what locals refer to as the ‘short rains.’ This marks the start of the rainy season, which typically begins in October. During this time, you can expect pleasant afternoons with temperatures hovering around 23 degrees Celsius, or 73 degrees Fahrenheit. This period brings refreshing showers that nourish the land, supporting the vibrant ecosystems that thrive in the conservancy.

  • December, January, and February

From December to February, Solio Ranch Conservancy experiences a quieter time in terms of rainfall. This phase, lying between the short rains and the long rains, brings drier weather, though it’s not completely dry. Rain can still surprise you on some days, making it hard to know for sure when the next shower will arrive.

  • March, April and May

At Solio Ranch Conservancy, when March rolls around, it marks the start of the ‘long rains.’ April is the wettest month, with rain falling almost every day, even if it’s just for a little while. The roads can get really muddy and tough to navigate as the ground soaks up all that water. Mornings can be particularly chilly, with temperatures dipping to around 11 degrees Celsius (52 degrees Fahrenheit), so it’s a good idea to wear something warm before the day heats up.

BEST WAY TO REACH TO SOLIO RANCH CONSERVANCY

By Road

The Solio Ranch Conservancy can be reached by driving about 180 kilometers from Nairobi which takes about 3 hours by car. The ranch is also just 45 kilometers from Nanyuki, the gateway to the rest of Laikipia. This means that you can easily combine Solio with visits to Ol Pejeta, Lewa, and the other conservancies of Laikipia. Aberdare and Mt Kenya National Parks are also close by.

By Air

Visitors to Solio Ranch Conservancy can choose to fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Nanyuki Airstrip where they will be met and transferred to the conservancy, a drive of around 45 minutes. Alternatively, there is the option to opt for a private charter flight directly to the Solio airstrip.
