Wildlife at Mnemba Island

For such a small island, Mnemba has a diverse assortment of species, both above and below the water. The island is home to the Suni antelope, which was initially imported from Unguja’s Jozani Forest. The island is also home to the Ader’s duiker. This is Africa’s rarest antelope, with about 300-600 individuals left in the wild, according to specialists.

Because there are no natural predators, Mnemba Island was chosen as a protection location for the Ader’s duiker. There are 25 Ader’s duikers on the island, but they are exceedingly secretive and difficult to find. An elliptical reef surrounds the island, which has been designated as a marine conservation area.

The warm waters surrounding the island are home to humpback whales, three species of dolphins, and whale sharks. The turtle nesting season on Mnemba, which takes place in February and March, is one of the most fascinating sights to see. Green turtles deposit their eggs in the warm sands frequently, and the island is a turtle sanctuary.

The marine reserve is divided into four ecosystems, each of which is home to a different species of Indian Ocean wildlife: humpback whales, vulnerable green sea turtles, three types of dolphins, whale sharks (the world’s largest fish), and migratory and resident shore birds both can be found here. There are around 600 different species of coral reef fish. Between February and September, green sea turtles can be seen laying their eggs on the beaches.
