Kitulo National Park – Leading Honeymoon Escape

Kitulo National Park – Leading Honeymoon Escape

Tanzania, an East African paradise for safari-goers, is home to 22 national parks. And each of these parks is unique. Serengeti, for example, is always on the bucket list of many visitors, especially first-timers. It offers life-changing experiences like trekking the Great Migration or ticking off the Big Five, but it gets crowded, especially in peak season.

So, what if you want a peaceful honeymoon escape? Is there any peaceful location in Tanzania for newlyweds? Yes, there’s an option. You’ll find it in this article, and a little more advice on why it’s unique for honeymooners. Let’s explore.

At the 2025 World Travel Awards ceremony held in Dar es Salaam, Kitulo National Park won the Africa’s Leading Honeymoon Destination 2025. This win is very important not for Tanzania Tourism, but for newlyweds seeking a perfect escape that resonates with their wishes.

What’s Kitulo National Park?

Kitulo is a national park located in the south of Tanzania between the Njombe and Mbeya regions. Established in 2005, Kitulo spans 412.9 square kilometers in size and comprises beautiful montane forests, hills, and rivers. Perched at the Kitulo Plateau about 2,600 meters above sea level, this park is quiet all year round.

Why is Kitulo the best honeymoon destination in Africa?

It’s the “Serengeti of Flowers.”

Kitulo is home to over 350 vascular plant species, which include over 35 species of orchids. Its landscape usually turns into a picturesque, colorful setting when flowers blossom. For that, visitors normally refer to it as the ‘Serengeti of Flowers’ or ‘Garden of God.’

Just as the Serengeti hosts abundant animals, Kitulo is home to abundant floral species that cover its grasslands. Here, you can see endemic flower species like Impatiens kituloensis – a touch-me-not flower, and Brachystelma kituloensis – a tuberous plant with star-like flowers. Other flowers commonly found include aster, daisies, disa, delphiniums, etc.

Everyone loves beautiful flowers. And they’re of crucial importance for honeymooners. This park offers live flowers for gifting and surprising your partner. Or imagine a framed picture of you and your special one with a background of red-hot poker flowers or giant lobelias. It reminds you of your peaceful honeymoon safari.

It’s quite year-round.

Silence is key to making the most of your honeymoon safari. It welcomes romance and reconciliation. Unlike busy northern parks where it’s noisy in there, Kitulo is silent throughout the year. That said, it’s a perfect spot where you’ll spend time away from the crowd.

And because most visitors prefer the famous northern parks downplaying Kitulo, it’s a budget-friendly option, which suits every budget.

What to do in Kitulo National Park for honeymooners?

Well, we know that even small actions matter for newlyweds. Kitulo offers intimate activities specially for couples. Here are some of them:

Walking safaris

Picture a hand-in-hand walk in a beautiful wild garden, a few meters from your camp. You stand a chance to chase butterflies or witness bees harvest honey. A botanical expert will accompany you and will answer all your questions along the way.

Hiking

For couples who like hiking, you’ve come to the perfect spot. The Livingstone Mountains offer a tough, gentle hike to one of their peaks. Embrace yourself with a morning hand-in-hand hike through the lush montane forests, explore hidden trails, and have fun with the kipunji monkeys along the way.

Birding

Kitulo has a record of over 350 bird species, including some of the rarest ones like Denham’s bustard and the endangered blue swallow. Since birds love flowers as you do, you’ll see many of them while exploring the botanical wild gardens of Kitulo.

A good picture is worth a thousand words, goes an English saying. In Kitulo National Park, it’s worth more than that. Enjoy the scenic background of the highlands and flowers.

When to go to Kitulo National Park?

Flowers come into life between November and April. Millions of wildflowers carpet the landscape in shades of orange, violet, and yellow. This is the best time to experience the ‘floral migration’ of Kitulo.

How to get to Kitulo?

Fly into the Mbeya Airport (Songwe) from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Zanzibar. Then, take a drive from Mbeya City to the Matama Gate (the park’s main entrance), which usually takes 2-3 hours.

Where to stay in Kitulo?

At the time of writing, the park has limited lodging options. Basic camping is better for an authentic safari experience. However, there are better options available outside the park in either Njombe, Makambako, or Mbeya towns. Better options include Mbeya Hotel in Mbeya, Mexons Cliff Hotel in Njombe, and Capetown Annex Guest House in Makambako.
