Gorilla families in virunga national park : Virunga national park is a great mountain gorilla habitant in democratic republic of Congo, the park is a re-known oldest park in Africa found in the east region of the country. Virunga national park is a forested national park lieing in the Albertine rift valley covering an area of 8,090 square kilometers, the park is area stretches through two active volcanoes that is mount Nyiragongo and mount Nyamuragira which are habitant for mountain gorillas. Virunga national park was established in 1925 and it is a UNESCO world heritage site because of its diverse ecological system include the critically endangered mountain gorillas.

Virunga national park is a home to 8 gorilla families which are open for trekking as listed below

Rugendo gorilla family

Rugendo gorilla family is one of the most interesting gorilla families in Virunga national park, this family is one of the oldest gorilla family in the mountain forests of Virunga national park habituated in 1989. Initially Rugendo gorilla consisted of 18 gorilla family members under the leadership of a dominant silver back Rugendo from the group gets its name. Under the leadership of Rugendo the family consisted of two silverbacks that is rugendo the leader and Humba his son, since not family can peacefully thrive with silverbacks conflicts for power between rugendo and his son Humba started to raise. The conflicts for power resulted in to Humba the son leaving the group to form his own, he left with 10 members leaving the group with only 8 members. Rugendo is a father to many silverbacks of Virunga national park that is Mapuwa, Humba, Ruzirabwoba, Mukunda, Nyakamwe, Mburanumwe, Baseka, Kongomani, Lubutu and Bahati. Silver back rugendo was killed by the rebels in 2001 in Bukima area and was succeeded by his son Senkwekwe who was also killed in 2007 together with other gorillas by unknown people. After the death of silverback  Senkwekwe he was succeeded by a dominant silverback Bukima who is currently the leader of the group of 9 members, the additional member is a sub adult grabbed from Mapuwa gorilla family.

Humba gorilla family

Humba gorilla family is another old family in Virunga national park a break away from Rugendo the oldest gorilla family in the park, the family in habits and it trekked in bukima sector of the park. Most trekkers loved trekking this family because it has been identified as one of the calmest and wonderful gorilla family in forest of Virunga national park, humba gorilla family is under the leadership of a dominant silverback Humba who is a son to Silverback Rugendo and it him who lead other 9 members to break way from Rugendo gorilla family to form Humba gorilla family. Silverback Humba is also a brother to Senkwekwe silverback a once leader of the Rugendo gorilla family who was murdered on 22nd July 2007 by unknown armed men who are presumed to might have been rebels or poachers. Humba is also a brother to Mapuwa, Humba, Ruzirabwoba, Mukunda, Nyakamwe, Mburanumwe, Baseka, Kongomani, Lubutu and Bahati silverbacks.

Mapuwa gorilla family

Mapuwa gorilla family is an interesting gorilla family inhabiting and trekked in Jomba near Bunagana along the border of democratic republic of Congo and Uganda, this family was formed in 1998 by Mapuwa silverback who broke away from in 1995. Mapuwa is a son of Rugendo silverback a former leader of rugendo gorilla family and a brother to Humba, Ruzirabwoba, Mukunda, Nyakamwe; Mburanumwe, Baseka, Kongomani, Lubutu and Bahati silverbacks. Unlike his brother Humba, Mapuwa left the group with no one but himself into solitary life together with his brother Ruzirabwoba, Mapuwa gorilla family currently consists of 22 gorilla individuals with 3 silverbacks, 3 black backs, 6 adult females, 2 sub-adult females, 4 juveniles, and 5 babies under the leadership of Mapuwa dominant silverback from whom the family derives its name. Mapuwa dominant silverback is courageous silverback evidenced by him defeating Pilipili a well-known strongest silverback in the whole of Virunga national park.

 Kabirizi gorilla family

Kabirizi gorilla family is one of the most interesting gorilla families in Virunga national park inhabiting and trekked around bakima area  formed in 1994, at the time of its formation the family was known as Ndungutse under the leadership of a dominant silverback Zunguruka  who unfortunately died of old age and was succeeded by his son Ndungutse. Ndungutse only lead the group for a few period of time until 1977 when he was shot dead by bullets a midst a cross fire between democratic republic of congo  and the Rwandan rebel near the bakima patrol post.

After the death of Ndungutse the leadership of the group of 13 members was taken over by his son Buhanga who was constantly challenged by his brother karateka, the constant challenge between brothers escalated into a fight forcing karateka to exit the group with 3 gorilla individuals. Currently kabirizi gorilla family is under the leader ship of a dominant silverback kabirizi with 19 gorilla members that is 2 Silverbacks, 1 Blackback, 4 adult females, 1 Sub-adult male, 3 Sub-adult females, 4 Juveniles and 4 infants.

Lulengo gorilla family

Lulengo gorilla family in Virunga national park habituated and started in 1985 is found in Jomba, this family was started under the leadership of a dominant silverback 1985 Rugabo, unfortunately Rugabo was together with 2 female gorillas were shot dead in 1994 in jomba by poachers. Lulengo gorilla family was originally known as Musekura group but after the death of Rugabo the group’s name changed to Lulengo the son and a successor of Rugabo. Lulego silverback is a former family member of Rugabo gorilla family and a son of Rugabo and he is still the leader of this group which consists of 9 members with 1 silverback, 3 adult females, 1 sub adult male, 1 juvenile and 3 babies.

Munyaga gorilla family

Munyaga gorilla family in Virunga national park is found in Bukima area habituated in 2008, the group is named after Munyanga silverback who was a lone wild silverback. In 1998 silverback munyaga met Buhanga group which was headed by an adult female gorilla Nsekuye, he used the absence of a dominant silverback in the group as an advantage to make himself the leader of the group. Munyaga constantly came into clashed with kabirizi group which resulted in loss of all his females to kabirizi group, the loss of his females led Munyaga to disappear for 2 years. Due to lack of a leader he was succeeded by silverback Mawazo, as a result of power conflicts silverback Mawazo lost his leadership to silverback Gasore who is still the leader of the group of 9 individuals with 3 silverbacks, 2 adult females, 2 juveniles and 2 baby gorillas.

Nyakamwe gorilla family

Nyakamwe gorilla family is also found in Bukima area formed in 2014 as it split for Humba group, this family is under the leadership of silverback Nyakamwe who led the break away from Humba gorilla group and from whom the family is named after. Nyakamwe silverback left the Humba group with 10 individuals and currently the group consists of 11 members that is 2 silverbacks, 1 blackback, 3 adult females, 1 sub-adult female, 2 juveniles and 2 babies.

Bageni gorilla family

Bageni gorilla family in Virunga national park is found in Bukima and Gatovu areas of the park, bageni gorilla family was formed in 2013 and it is under the leadership of silverback Bageni leading a group 26 members that is 1 Silverback, 2 Black backs, 10 Adult females, 1 Sub-adult female, 3 Juveniles, and 9 babies. Silverback Bageni split from kabirizi group who left the group with 20 individual including his mother Mapendo and brother.
