Historical Importance of Bagamoyo

Bagamoyo is a seaside town established in the late 18th century. Located 70 km north of Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo is one of the oldest towns in Tanzania and has long been a crossroads of European, Arab, Swahili, and Indian explorers and traders. It was where slaves from the interior were collected to be deported to Zanzibar or overseas. The name Bagamoyo originated in the suffering of the slaves in the Swahili word – Bwaga Moyo translates as throw the heart.  

Bagamoyo Town is an ancient East African trade port. It is an expansion of Kaole, a much older Swahili people hamlet from the 8th century. The German colonial authority designated it as German East Africa’s capital, and it evolved into one of the most important commercial ports for Germans along the coast of East Africa west. The Arabs and Indians influenced the town by creating a unique Swahili culture.

The caravan Serai: The Caravan Serai is one of the places of memory in Bagamoyo, linked to 19th-century ivory and slaves. It is a place where the name of the town was born. Its port was the penalty stop for the slave and ivory caravans that traveled on foot from Lake Tanganyika. Once the Caravans reached Bagamoyo, the slaves and ivory were shifted to Zanzibar by Dhows, then finally shipped to the world.

Kaole ruins: Kaole was among the Swahili coastal towns on the coast of east Africa, which existed before the 9th century. Before the 9th century, this area was inhabited by the Africans among the Zaramo and Kwere tribes. At the beginning of the 9th century, Kaole was inhabited by the Irans from shiraz. These people settled in Kaole and became very famous traders. It declined during the end of the 18th century because people shifted to Bagamoyo Town. So, now it is ruined, an archeological site with different pillars and graves, which are one of the most things you can see is the mosque which was among the earliest mosque along the coast of east Africa.

The Catholic Church Museum: The Catholic Church Museum of Bagamoyo is the first church in east Africa. It serves as the Largest Historical site consisting of several churches and old buildings such as the Livingstone tower, the first and second churches, the baobab tree, and the cemetery where some of the earliest missionaries were buried. The museum is on the ground of the building with several art and crafts, paintings, photographs, and documents that date far back to the 19th century, art and crafts were from the German government and churches, and some were from the local enslavement that went through the area.

Bagamoyo old fort: The old Fort of Bagamoyo is one among the oldest forts in Africa, located at the old town section in Bagamoyo. It was first established in the early 1860s by Abdallah Suleiman, one of the first Arab traders in the area and the only man who was not involved in the slave trade.

German Old Boma: the stone town of Bagamoyo was the first capital of German in east Africa. The German old boma was a colonial statehouse built in the 19th century.

Generally, Bagamoyo is more attractive from the people’s attention to visitors and cultural centers like the Bagamoyo museum. There are several comfortable beaches and cultural foods such as (Supu ya Pweza), cassavas (Mihogo), and the best small sea fish.
