Lake Mburo national park
Lake Mburo national park is a scenic located park situated in kiruhura district in western region of Uganda situated along Kampala-mbarara route, Lake Mburo national park is the only national park in Uganda situated close to Kampala the capital city of Uganda and the starting point of most safaris. Lake Mburo national park covers an area of 260 square kilometrers which stretches around a scenic landscape which is dotted with rolling hill, acacia woodlands, short savannah grasslands, over 12 lakes covered by swampy vegetation on their shores and a patches of forests.
Lake Mburo national park derives its name from Lake Mburo a prominent lake with the park, historically the park is a former grazing land for Banyankole and bahima people who grazed their animals in the lands. At the time of British administration the land was gazetted as a hunting ground in 1933, in 1983 it was upgraded to an a reserve. In 1983 the park was also upgraded to a national park under the orders of Dr. Milton obote the then president of Uganda.
Lake Mburo national park is a habitant to a variety of wildlife that is animals and birds, wildlife in the park include antelopes, Burchell’s zebra, impalas, spotted hyena, leopard, serval cat, spotted hyena, leopard and serval cat and many primates that is vervet monkeys and olive baboons. Lake Mburo national park is also a habitant to many bird species such as African finfoot, saddle billed stork, brown chested wattled plover, carruther’s cisticola, tabora cisticola, great snipe, Abyssinian ground hornbill, African fish eagle, saddle billed stork, brown-chested lapwing, black bellied bustard, grey crested crown, rufous bellied heron, Bateleur, coqui francolin, Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove, Brown Parrot, Red-headed Lovebird, Ross’s Turaco, Bare-faced Go-away-bird, Green Wood-hoopoe, Common Scimitar bill, White-headed Barbet, Red-faced Barbet, Nubian Woodpecker, Red-shouldered Cuckoo-shrike, Long-tailed Cisticola and many more.Lake Mburo national park is famous for hosting the largest population of antelopes in Uganda.
Activities in Lake Mburo national park
Lake Mburo national park is ranked as one of the most exciting destinations in Uganda offering the best game drive safaris that is day and night game drives in Uganda and east Africa, Lake Mburo national park as a wonderful destination is a home to many animals and game drive trails which are used by tourists on a game drive expedition. While on a game drive you get to spot animals like hare, porcupine, Aardvark, white tailed mongoose, side stripped jackal, honey badger, bush pig, spotted hyena, serval cat, jenet cat , thick-tailed galago, civet, black galago, zebras and many more which are spotted in the savannah dominated landscapes. Lake Mburo national park offers two sessions of game drives that is day and night game drive, day game drive is best for encountering numerous animals and night game drive is best for viewing nocturnal animals such as leopards, hyenas and many more.
Horseback riding safari
Horseback riding safari is a newly introduced activity in Lake Mburo national park and Uganda at large started in 2008 by Mihingo lodge which operates and manages this activity, horseback riding is one of the most natural way of touring the park without emitting fumes. As you ride in the park on the back of the horse you get a grand opportunity of getting close to the animals as they are not scared of the horse and also you get to enjoy the beautiful view of rolling hills.

Lake Mburo national park consists of 5 big lakes many other small lakes totaling to over 12 lakes in number with lake Mburo as the most prominent one because of its big size, lake Mburo and other lakes facilitate sport fishing in lake Mburo national park as they are home to many fish types that is tilapia, mud fish, star fish, catfish, barbell, tiger fish, Ngara and many more. As tourists on a sport fishing safari in Lake Mburo national park you use various fishing equipments like fishing rods which you can either rent at Lake Mburo or carry yours, tilapia is the most caught fish in Lake Mburo and after the expedition the fish caught are roasted on an evening barbeque
Lake Mburo national park is a dotted with magnificent landscape and many animals which are amazing to watch while visiting for the park and nature walks is one of the amazing way touring and enjoying the park’s attractions. Nature walks in Lake Mburo park takes you on a walk through numerous trails in the park that is Rubanga trail, interpretation trail, lake side trail and kigarama trail. On these trails you get to see many animals such as spotted hyena, leopard and serval cat. Diurnal primates such as vervet monkeys and olive baboons, nocturnal animals such as hare, porcupine, Aardvark, white tailed mongoose, side stripped jackal, honey badger, bush pig, spotted hyena, serval cat, jenet cat. Boat rides in Lake Mburo park is a best way of touring the numerous lakes in the park most especially Lake Mburo, on a boat rides you get to spot numerous animals like crocodiles, hippopotamus in the lake’s waters, birds like African fish eagles, herons, king fishers, shoebill and many more residing in the swampy area around the park and also get to enjoy the hilly landscape filled with rolling hills dominating the park.
Culture encounters in Lake Mburo national park is offered in both local communities and Igongo cultural centre, Lake Mburo national park offers authentic African cultural experience through 13 local communities found on the boundaries of the park. In these 13 local communities there is 9 groups which offer various cultural practices to the park and these include Rwabarata drama group, Ssana community, Nshara community tourism group, Masha community wildlife forum, Rubale fishing community, Ankole cultural community tourism group and Rwenjura campsite offering activities like Banyankole tradition dance Ekitaguriro, fishing adventures, bee keeping experience and many more. Igongo cultural centre is situated 4 kilometers from sanga gate of Lake Mburo national park, this center is a perfect place to visit for cultural encounters as it showcases the tradition and culture of banyakitara people that is bakiga, batooro, Banyoro and Banyankole people. Igongo cultural centre has a restaurant serving local dishes, a mini- museum showcasing traditional art crafts of the banyakitara people which are on the display.
