Aswa lolim game reserve is found in northern Uganda situated north of Murchison falls national park in Amuru district, the reserve was gazetteed to act as a migrating area for wildlife in Murchison falls national park. The reserves terrain elevation is about 769 meters above sea level west bank of the Albert Nile.
The game reserve derives its name from the two rivers meandering on its rolling hills that’s river Aswa and river Lolim, Aswa lolim Wildlife reserve was gazette in 1959 but was sadly degazzeted in 1972 under the influence of the then president of Uganda Idi Amin Dadaand recently in the year 2010 the Uganda Wildlife Authority gave the concession to a private group known as Aswa lolim Wildlife association.
The Aswa lolim Wildlife reserve used to cover 500,000 hectares of land before it was degazzeted and shared about 110 kilometers bordering Murchison falls national park. Even though animals staying in Aswa Lolim are still under conservation, most if the land has been used for farming.
Aswa Lolim game reserve is covered with valleys with creeks, ranches, farms, small forests, palm trees and papyrus swamps.
Some of the animals that used Aswa Lolim as a migrating zone can still be spotted here occasionally some of the examples are; elephants, duikers, black and white colobus monkey, Oribis, Hippopotamus, crocodiles, Olive baboons, warthogs, leopards, lions, lewelshartebeests and vervet monkeys among the rest.
Aswa Lolim was also endowed with different bird species some if this were migratory birds while others were residential birds. Some of this bird can still be seen such as; the rare shoebill, grey headed Olive back, piapiac, Emin’s shrike, Heuglin’s masked Weaver and many more.
Tourists can also go for boat riding safaris at the magnificent Albert Nile. They can also get involved in sports fishing from the lake.
Tourists visiting the game reserve can also encounter cultural experiences by visiting the locals, tourists can get entertained with local traditional dances and also acquire some gifts to take back home for remembrance.
The best time for visiting this game reserve is in the drier seasons, the rain season is always in the months of April and May then October and November.
Tourists visiting the reserve will have to book hotels in the near towns like in Gulu various accommodation units are available ranging from budget, mid range and luxurious. Camping can also down within Aswa Lolim game reserve but with permission from the land owner.
Thee reserve can be accessed from Amuru district in northern Uganda. Tourists can also visit the renowned Murchison falls for a more thrilling experience. At Murchison falls national park tourists will have the opportunity of viewing the world’s strongest waterfalls and many activities to be done including hot air ballooning.
