What is the famous peak in Tanzania? Tanzania is well-known for its wildlife safari destinations, which include Gombe National Park, Tarangire National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, and the Serengeti National Park. With a height of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa out of 2395 officially recognized mountains in the continent. With a prominence of 3,164 m (10,381 ft), the stratovolcano Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second most prominent summit.
Tanzania has a population of 60 million people and has 939,699 square kilometres (362,820 square miles) of land out of this 52 square kilometres (20 square miles) are lakes and about 805 kilometres (500 miles) is its coastline. Tanzania borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Malawi, Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Mozambique. Topography in Tanzania ranges from highlands in the north and south to low-lying coastal plains and an arid plateau.
Tanzania is made up of some islands such as Zanzibar, Pembe, Ugunja, and Mafia in addition to its mainland. Tanzania too has several mountain ranges, including the Pare, Kipengere, Usambara, Uluguru, Udzungwa, and Mahale rivers. Few mountains in Africa have glaciers, including Mount Kilimanjaro. According to its name, Mount Kenya, which is situated in neighbouring Kenya, is the other prominent glaciated summit in Africa. In northwest region of Tanzania is Lake Victoria, the world’s second-largest freshwater lake after Lake Superior in the United States and Canada. As for freshwater lakes, Lake Baikal in Russia is the deepest in the world, while Lake Tanganyika in southwest Tanzania is the second deepest.
Tanzania is has 22 national parks and several reserves , wildlife conservancies. Four of these parks—the Serengeti National Park, Kilimanjaro National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Selous Game Reserve—are designated as UNESCO Natural World Heritage Sites.
Mountain Ranges
The Eastern Arc Mountains include the mountains that ascend towards southeast Kenya from south-central Tanzania. Parts of the Pare, Usambara, Nguru, Ukaguru, Rubeho, Uluguru, Mahenge, and Udzungwa mountains are part of this mountain range. The majority of the Eastern Arc Mountains’ summits were raised during a period of tectonic activity in the area approximately 100 million years ago. Since the mountains’ original formation, they have gone through several stages of erosion and uplift. The formation of the East African Rift System about 7 million years ago marked the most recent elevation. Precambrian crystalline rocks, including gneisses, granulites, quartzites, schists, marbles, and amphibolites, make up the Eastern Arc Mountains. The mountain range crystalline bedrock is partially hidden by more recent sedimentary and volcanic materials. These include conglomerates, sandstones, shales, and mudstones. Moreover, igneous rocks are among the youngest in the range, with many of them only 5 million years old.
The highest mountain in the continent and the fourth-most famous mountain worldwide is Kilimanjaro. Numerous volcanoes and calderas can be found to the west of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. Among these are the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the biggest calderas in the world, and the still-active Ol Doinyo Lengai.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is the most famous summit in Tanzania, it is also the highest mountain in Tanzania and all of Africa. This makes it one of the most visited Tanzania safari destination for mountain climber. As one of the Seven Summits, Kilimanjaro is an absolute must-climb for serious mountain climbers. Nevertheless, all climbers must be accompanied by a guide, per national and park laws in Kilimanjaro National Park. Although guides usually handle all aspects of climbing permits, porters, and lodging on the mountain, depending on your budget, Kilimanjaro trips can range from straightforward mountaineering activities to more opulent guided expeditions.
There are seven options to climb Mount Kilimanjaro which are: the Northern Circuit, Lemosho, Shira, Machame, Rongai, Marangu, and Umbwe routes. For novice climbers, the Lemosho and Machame routes are usually suggested. The Lemosho route sees more traffic than most other areas of the mountain, many guides contend that it is a highly scenic route. Both the Machame and Marangu routes are highly travelled. The Rongai path is a wonderful choice to consider if you wish to arrive from the north, where you may enjoy a more strenuous walk with less tourists. As an alternative, consider hiking the Northern Circuit for a greater distance.
Climbers usually have the best success rate on Kilimanjaro when hiked for 7- to 8-day, but it is possible too to climb with a short time The advantage of more days is that hikers have more time to adjust to the high altitude of the mountain on longer trips. The peak has been successfully summited in as few as five days, but during shorter excursions, bad weather or difficulties acclimating to the elevation can prevent a successful summit.
Mount Meru
Tanzania is an East African nation well-known for its wildlife safari locations, including Gombe National Park, Tarangire National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, and the Serengeti National Park. Of the 2395 officially recognised mountains in the country, Mount Kilimanjaro stands at the highest point, 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), making it the highest mountain in Africa. Although it is possible to do the route in three days, most hikers need four days to finish it. On Mount Meru, there is a good chance of seeing wildlife, particularly in the lower, forested areas of the mountain.

Gombe Stream National park
The chimpanzee population that Jane Goodall investigated during her ground breaking research in the 1960s can be found in Gombe National Park, also known as Gombe Stream National Park, which lies tucked away along the eastern banks of Lake Tanganyika. With an area of around 52 square km (20 square mi), Gombe National Park is a tiny, isolated protected area. But if they go into the park’s amazing forest with a guide, they can find one of the chimpanzee troops that are so unique to the area. The park offers hard off-trail trekking in humid conditions. Where the chimpanzees are hanging out during your stay will determine how long and how far you walk in a particular day in Gombe.
To maximise the likelihood of finding the chimpanzees, park treks typically begin early in the day. In the event that you are unable to locate the chimpanzees on your first day of trekking, it is advised that you reserve two days of trekking in the park.
Usambara Mountains National Park
North-eastern Tanzania is home to a group of craggy peaks called the Usambara Mountains. The range’s rich tropical forest and clear-day views of the Indian Ocean from some summits make mountain trekking there immensely rewarding without being too challenging. Hiking routes in the range typically require several days, and lodging is usually provided in the communities you pass through. Compared to more popular Tanzania safari tour destinations, trails in the Usambara Mountains provide a more genuine cultural experience and a close-up view of local life by passing through forest reserves and rural roads.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park
Udzungwa National Park in central Tanzania is a secluded, off-road protected region. This park contains sections of tropical forest, montane forest, high steppe, and Miombo woodland. It’s only accessible by foot. The elevation fluctuates; on Lohomero, it can reach height of 2,576 meters (8,451 feet) and lows of roughly 250 meters (820 feet). At Udzungwa, a 4-hour trek that leads to the summit of the Sanje Waterfalls is one of the most well-liked walks. After a day of climbing, visitors are welcome to swim in the pools beneath the waterfall, but they do so at their own risk.
