January to April 2022

In Tanzania safaris, 367,632 tourist visited various attractions compared to 275,097 tourists who visited this glorious country during similar period in 2021. This indicates that, the tourist arrivals spiked by 33.6 percent, equivalent to 92,535. About 124,212 (33.8 percent) of the recorded arrivals in this period entered the country via Zanzibar Island. The number of arrivals recorded in April 2022 was 78,784 as compared to 43, 966 recorded in April 2021 signifying a 79.2 percent increase.

January to May 2022

The number of tourists who visited various Tanzania safari attractions during January to May 2022 was 458,048 compared to 317,270 arrivals during the corresponding period last year indicating 44.8 percent rise. Out of 458,048 arrivals, 137,758 tourists entered the country through Zanzibar Island, equivalent to 30.1 percent. The number of tourist arrivals in May 2022 is 89,271 signifying a 117.7 percent increase from 42,173 recorded in 2021.

During this period, France accounted for the largest share of tourist arrivals from outside the African continent with 28,115 tourist arrivals followed by Poland with 22,651 arrivals. Other countries with high records include the United States of America (21,661), Germany (16,527), Britain (14,136), and India (13,160).

January to July 2022

742,133 tourist arrivals were recorded between January and July 2022 compared to 456,266 visited the country in 2021. This indicates a 62.7 percent increase from the tourist arrivals recorded last year. Out of 742,133 tourist arrivals, 222,449 tourists entered the country through Zanzibar Island that is 30.0 percent of total arrivals. The number of tourist arrivals recorded for the month of July 2022 increased to 166,736 tourists from 81,307 tourists equivalent to an expansion of 105.1 percent.

During this period of January to July 2022, visitors from the United States of America led the trends of tourist arrivals from outside the African continent with 51,301 visitors followed by France with 47,403 visitors. Other tourist arrivals were from Germany (30,817), Poland (29,004) and Britain (28,275). African countries had a significant contribution to tourist arrivals recorded for the period of January to July 2022. Such countries include Kenya which contributed the largest share of arrivals in the period with 86,220 tourist arrivals followed by Burundi with 54,877 visitors and Malawi with 27,079 visitors. Other countries include Uganda (21,080) and South Africa (20,868). Furthermore, Kenya led the race for the month of July 2022 with 16,654 tourists followed by Burundi (7,966), Malawi (5,113), South Africa (4,335) and Rwanda (4,035).

January to October 2022

The figures of tourist arrivals between January and October 2022 amounted to 1,175,697 visitors compared to 716,741 during the corresponding period last year. This signifies a 64% rise which is equivalent to 458,956 tourists and the rise is attributed by the Royal Tour documentary and other initiatives by the government. In October 2022, the NBS recorded up to 141,517 tourist arrivals compared to 92,345 in 2021 indicating a 53.2% increase compared to the figures recorded in the corresponding period in 2021.

Economic Contribution of Tourism Sector in Tanzania in 2022

Tanzania’s tourism revenues amounted to USD 2,560.7 million in 2022 from USD 1,310.3 million in 2021. The 2022 earnings were very close to USD 2.6 million in revenues and 1.5 million arrivals, a peak recorded in 2019. The sector’s contribution to the GDP fell 10.6 percent in 2019 to 5.3% in 2020 and climbed to 5.7% in 2021.
